Item The Flash Magazine - December 2019 edition(University of Embu, 2020-12) University of EmbuAs we congratulate the 2020 class, it is worth noting that this is the most unique cohort since the inception of the University. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a tangible threat to the completion of their studies and subsequent graduation. However, with concerted efforts made by the University Management, academic staff and the entire University fraternity, their dream has finally come true. The Directorates of Open, Distance & e-Learning (ODeL) and ICT deserve a pat on the back for the well-coordinated e-learning exercise that ensured the success of our Graduation Ceremony. In the midst of the global crisis, the University managed to continue with its ongoing projects that saw the phased use of the new Tuition Block, acquisition of a new 46-seater bus and development of new academic programmes. All the necessary facilities have also been put up in order to curb the spread of COVID-19, in line with the Ministry of Health protocols. For the first time, the University of Embu Students Association (UESA) elections and swearing in ceremony for the new office bearers were done virtually, enabling students to participate from home. This was a remarkable milestone for the University since no leadership vacuum has been left by the outgoing comrades. Admission and orientation for first year students was also done virtually. This was a very rare experience for the freshers since they attended classes before setting foot at the University!Item The Flash Magazine - September 2019 edition(University of Embu, 2019-09)This year’s graduation ceremony comes at a time when the education sector in the Country is undergoing a major transformation. A few years from now, universities will be hosting a completely different cadre of students who will be in their final phase of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). In anticipation of this revolution, the University of Embu has, and continues to strategize itself as a credible first-class institution of higher learning. In this 4th Graduation Ceremony Special Souvenir Issue, we focus on the strides that students, staff and the entire University community has taken since the 3 rd graduation ceremony. In the news is the establishment of the School of Law and consequent admission of pioneer Bachelor of Laws students in the 2019/2020 Academic Year. This is not a mean achievement for the University, bearing in mind the rigours involved in the establishment of the programme and the accreditation process by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and the Council of Legal Education (CLE). The Editorial Board congratulates the fresh graduates and wishes them God’s blessings as they go out to serve in various capacities. We wish to remind them that graduating from one level introduces them to the next level and they need to remain focused and determined in order to exploit the full potential that the Lord has put in them. Congratulations!Item The Flash Magazine - May 2019 edition(University of Embu, 2019-05)As individuals and institutions make strides in growth and development, they undergo a myriad of changes and challenges. The University of Embu, like other upcoming institutions, has metamorphosed from a simple Agricultural Staff Training Institute to an admirable modern University. This edition explores some of the milestones that the University has attained in the recent past. Major events featured in this edition range from the official opening of the new state-of-theart Professor George Magoha Library and the launch of the University Endowment Fund by the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, to the formal installation of Prof. Daniel Mugendi Njiru as the first Vice-Chancellor of University of Embu. This edition also features the University’s 3 rd Graduation Ceremony during which the best Editorial EDITORIAL BOARD graduating student received the Chancellor’s Award. Other top-performing students in the five schools won University scholarships and have since joined various masters’ programmes. Our very talented student artists also displayed their prowess during the 3rd UNESCO-KNATCOM Cultural Celebrations held at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu County, where they scooped national awards. Despite the reduction in government capitation in the recent past, University activities have been going on without disruption, albeit at a limited scale. This has been made possible by the University’s symbiotic relationship with its research and financial partners. To this end, the 3rd University Cultural Festival received a financial boost of Ksh. 1.6 million from Kenya Commercial Bank which enabled the activity to go on as scheduled. Other notable successful events include the Careers Day, University of Embu Students Association (UESA) elections, Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service and the Open Access Week. The above milestones could not have been achieved without the cooperation of various stakeholders. The Flashlight Editorial Board wishes to appreciate individuals and corporates who have continuously supported the University in its endeavour to provide excellent training and research for service to humanity. As you read this edition, remember to ask yourself what you have done so far to make the University what it is today. We also wish to ask staff, students and all our stakeholders to support the Vice-Chancellor in his tireless efforts to firmly place the University in the league of world class universities. The task is not easy, but with God all things are possible.Item The Flash Magazine - September 2018 edition(University of Embu, 2018-09) University of EmbuIn this edition of the Flashlight Magazine, we feature various revolutionary events that have had a tremendous impact internally and externally, which are evident enough that we live true to our philosophy of enhancing human capacity for societal development. One of the main achievements of the University is the development of major infrastructure that would enhance excellent service delivery. These include: a spacious, modern and well equipped Library and Administration Block that will accommodate staff members; and part of it will be used as lecture halls. Another major achievement is the certification to Information Security Management System based on ISO 27001:2013 and recertification to ISO 9001:2015 which validates the University’s unrelenting adherence to best practises and processes. Giving back to society is ethical for any organization. The University of Embu has taken this position seriously and through the efforts of key University personnel, establishment of an endowment fund is underway and its success will see many needy students benefit. What is your part in this as an individual? Each one of us is called upon to support this noble cause. The enthusiasm with which these developments have been received by students, staff and the community is amazing. It’s clear that the University of Embu is committed to quality and excellence at every stage of service delivery. We are all happy to serve and we actually are more than grateful to have the opportunity to do so. We are proud of our students who from this graduation day, turn to graduates with a vantage position. To our graduates, whom we confidently release to the market, we urge you to remain innovative, spread your wings, touch hearts and brighten your corners; for these are the strongholds you have been equipped with through training at the University of Embu.Item The Flash Magazine - June 2018 edition(University of Embu, 2018-06)In this issue of the Flashlight magazine, we feature several history-making events that have taken place in the University in the recent past and which will forever remain embedded in the University books of history. These include the inaugural Chancellor’s State of the University Address, the appointment of Prof. Daniel Mugendi as the 1st Vice-Chancellor, the 1st University Open Day, the 1st Graduation Ceremony since the award of Charter and the 1st International Conference on Decolonizing Education. With all the appointments, meetings, deadlines, assignments, reports, crowded time-tables and the usual University routines, it is easy to get caught up and fail to notice these major milestones in the University and the impact they have on the future of the University. We are proud of all our accomplishments since the establishment of the University, in 2012 as the Embu University College, a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi which in 2016 was awarded its Charter and changed its name to the University of Embu (UoEm.) The developments we have witnessed in the last 6 years are phenomenal for a young institution like UoEm but we are even more excited about what is yet to come. As we move forward, it is imperative that we anticipate and prepare for the challenges we are likely to face tomorrow. We need to look forward to the future not just by preparing for it, but also by influencing its course so that the future comes without surprises. The gains we have made in the past feed directly to the ongoing 2018 – 2028 Strategic Planning process which is almost complete and the final Plan is scheduled to be launched later this year. The big question is; what is your individual contribution towards making a great future a reality? It is our responsibility, from the Chancellor, to the Council, the Management, Staff, Students and all stakeholders to fully dedicate ourselves in making the best contribution towards building on the present status of the University in order to shape the future of the University as a successful and dynamic epicenter of excellence in training and research for service to humanity and also serve the best interests of all citizens. The Editorial Committee of the Flashlight magazine takes this opportunity to congratulate Prof. Daniel Mugendi on his appointment as the first Vice-Chancellor of UoEm. We also recognise and congratulate Prof. Kiplagat Kotut and Prof. Eucharia Kenya on their appointment as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic, Research and Extension; and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Planning, Administration and Finance, respectively. We wish you all the best as you steer the University to greater heights of development.Item The Flash Magazine - 2017 edition(2017-09) University of Embuhe editorial team wishes to welcome you all to the 3 rd issue of The Flashlight Magazine.
