Staff Profile - Dr. Bernard Mukiri Gichimu

Dr. Bernard Mukiri Gichimu is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Water & Agricultural Resource Management, University of Embu. He holds BSc. and MSc. Degrees in Horticulture from Maseno University and PhD in Plant Breeding from JKUAT. Previously, he worked in Horticultural Companies before joining Coffee Research Institute (formerly Coffee Research Foundation) in Ruiru as a Plant Breeder and the Head of Plant Breeding Section, where he worked for 6 years. Bernard has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and participated in numerous academic and professional conferences. He has also managed several donor-funded projects and fostered several collaborative partnerships. Besides, Bernard has participated in many local and international consultancy missions and he is an active player in the Agriculture Sector in Kenya and an active member of the Horticultural Association of Kenya and the Plant Breeders Association of Kenya. Dr. Daniel Mutiso is a Tutorial fellow at University of Embu, a constituent college of University of Nairobi. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and a Masters in Applied Parasitology from the University of Nairobi. He is currently pursuing Doctorate degree in Applied Parasitology at Embu University College. His PhD focus is on the Epidemiology of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminth Polyparasitism in Machakos County, Kenya.

Dr. David Muchangi Mugo, a Kenyan Citizen, is a PhD holder of Information Systems from Kenyatta University, Kenya. He has a Master’s of Science (MSc) Degree in Computer Science from Technical University of Hamburg, Germany and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) where he specialized in Technology Management from Northern Institute of Technology Management, Hamburg, Germany. He graduated with a first class honours degree in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Kenyatta University. Professionally, Dr. David Mugo is renowned Knowledge Management Consultant, a certified IBM Big Data Engineer, a certified IBM Cloud Developer and also an IBM certified Artificial Intelligence Analyst. Dr. David Mugo has been a lecturer for more than ten years and is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Embu, Kenya. Additionally, he is the current Chairman, Department of Computing and Information Technology (CIT), University of Embu. Previously, he has been the coordinator, Website and Electronic Repository at the University of Embu where he propelled the University towards higher Universities’ Webometrics Ranking. Dr. David Mugo is actively engaged in community empowerment efforts. He serves as a Chairman of St. John Chrysostom Muvandori Mixed Secondary School and Vice Chairman of St Alphonse Mixed Secondary School and St. Anne Girls Kiriari High School. He also holds various leadership positions in several BOMs of Secondary Schools and in the Catholic Church both at the Parish Level as well as at the Diocese Level. He has been a great motivational speaker in a number of secondary and primary schools in order to mold future leaders, professionals and academicians. He is a married man and a father of two boys and one girl.

Dr. Muturi holds a PhD in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology from Makerere University, Uganda, MSc. in Crop Protection and BSc. Agriculture from University of Nairobi, Kenya. She won scholarships for postgraduate training (MSc and PhD) from the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). In 2012, she was recognized by the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development Programme (AWARD) to be among the 70 impressively talented and motivated very young women researchers in Africa. In 2013, she was awarded a two-year fellowship by AWARD to strengthen her leadership and science skills. AWARD is a professional development program that strengthens the research and leadership skills of African women in agricultural science, empowering them to contribute more effectively to poverty alleviation and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. She has over five years practical experience in dry lands research in collaboration with International Crops Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Team player and networked with scientists from public and private sectors. She has worked with rural communities and participated in farmers exchange programs in Eastern Africa. She has presented her research findings in conference and published her work in international peer reviewed journals. She is a mentor and participates in community development projects/programmes.

Staff Profile - Dr. Salome Atieno Migose

Dr. Migose is an alumnus of Wageningen University of the Netherlands where she attained her PhD in Livestock Production Systems, since 2020. Dr Migose did her MSc. in Animal Science (Animal Breeding option) and BSc in Animal Sciences at Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya. In 2012, she was a beneficiary of the fellowship from the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC) under a collaborative project between Egerton University and Wageningen University titled “Competent graduates for enhanced competitiveness in the dairy value chain” under the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Development in Higher Education (NICHE-KEN-127). Her PhD study focused on understanding smallholder farming systems to improve dairy development in Kenya. Results of her work were presented at the 66th Annual meeting of European Federation of Animal Production (EAAP) in 2015, at Tropentag in 2015 and at the Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences (WIAS) Science day in 2019. Two manuscripts related to the chapters of her PhD thesis are published and two manuscripts are submitted to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr Migose has gained much experience in training, research and extension in livestock production over the last 15 years. Prior to joining the University of Embu where he has been for the past 8 years, Dr Migose was involved in livestock extension while working at Livestock Recording Centre (LRC) of the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries, in projects such as east African agricultural productivity project (EAAPP), a collaborative project between the ministry and KARI (now KALRO) particularly in developing the productivity of dairy cattle through registration, recording and genetic evaluation. Dr Migose continues to network with Ministry of Agriculture, KALRO, ACTS, Performeter, and Sasini, among others. She is supervising one PhD and three Msc students in various projects among them identifying resilient livestock breeds and feed technologies for climate smart production systems for the Kenyan highlands and ASALs, under the KCSAP scholarship among others. She also provides mentorship to undergraduate students. She is involved in community outreach and extension activities with like-minded partners such as CARITAS. Besides, she is the chair of the livestock management sub-committee of the University farm, an Online and Distance Education and eLearning (ODeL) champion, and a member of the University Income generating projects (IGA) committee. Research Interests Livestock Production Systems, Animal breeding, animal feeds and feeding, livestock value chains, and matching breeding and feeding practices with production systems, climate change, sustainable food systems.

Prof. Daniel Mugendi Njiru, Ph.D., EBS is a renowned scholar, researcher, consultant and higher education administrator. He has made significant contributions in the area of agro-ecosystems research and management as well as the development of University education in Kenya. Currently, Prof. Mugendi is the Vice-Chancellor of University of Embu. In addition he also holds the following positions; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI); the Chairman, Board of Governors, Kirege Secondary School, Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County and the Lead Expert for Environmental Impact Assessment/Audit. He began his professional career as a researcher with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) before moving to Kenyatta University where he rose through the ranks of academic and professional leadership. He has previously served as the Chairman of the Department of Environmental Foundations - KU, Dean of the School of Environmental Studies and Human Sciences- KU and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance, Planning and Development) at Kenyatta University. He has conducted groundbreaking research focusing on agriculture, forestry and environmental policy and sustainability. In addition, he has worked extensively with communities, colleagues and partners, representing a diversity of forestry and environment sector interests both internationally and nationally. As a scholar of international repute, Professor Mugendi has authored many chapters in books and published many scholarly articles in his field in both national and international journals and continues to lecture, supervise postgraduate students and conduct research in International Forestry Policies, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management
