Item Budgetary Process and Financial Performance of Embu County Government, Kenya(University of Embu, 2019) Ngaira, ErickThe rate of absorbtion of development funds by Kenyan County Governments has been low, a factor that has gnawed at it for years since the inception of County Government in Kenya. The study ought to cletennine the effect of budgetary process on financial performance ofEmbu County government. The respondents consisted of 33 staff members from sectoral accountants, budget office, finance office, lFMIS department and County Economist. The study adopted descriptive research design where a questionnaire was used to collect data. The researcher also utilized County Fiscal Strategy Papers, County Government Budget Implementation Review Reports, County Budget Review and Outlook Papers and other vital Government Reports. The study applied descriptive and inferential statistics. Inferential statistics was applied for the purpose of determining the relationship between dependent variable and independent variables where a regression analysis was clone using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The research findings were presented via pie chart, bar charts and frequency tables. The study established that though Public Financial Management Act had been effectively adopted by the County in its budgetary planning, the public had not been effectively involved in budgetary planning, In addition, the County Government had fully improved on uptake of development funds. The study concluded that the two components of budgetary process that is budgetary planning and, budgetary monitoring and evaluation were significant and had influence on financial performance of the County. The study recommended that the County Government should that the audit committee is well constituted and there is adequate staff in finance, budget office, accounting procurement departments to prevent erroneous financial reporting. Furthermore, the study recommended that the County Government should make implementation of development projects a priority in order to improve on absorbtion of development funds. TI1e study sought to determine the impact of information technology on inventory management in Hospital. The objectives of the study were to establish the extent of usage of I'T systems in inventory management and to determine the impact of [T used on inventory management performance in hospital. The study used descriptive research design in which questionnaires were administered to different groups as per the population target. The data was analyzed using mean, standard deviation, variance, frequency and percentage. The study recorded a response rate of 65%. The study concluded that Vendor Managed Inventory and Transaction Process System were adopted at a great extent. Manufacturing firms face myriad of problems including poor inventory control, poor strategies in order fulfillment, reduced consumer effective demand due to poor forecasting and lack of proper ICT application systems leading to poor performance. The purpose of the study was to assess the role of strategic inventory management on performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study focused on 155 employees in the supply chain department at Diversey Eastern and Central Africa (DECAL). The target population was 105 employees from 'the various sections in the supply chain department who are directly involved in managing inventories in the organization. The sampling frame was the Human Resource register at DECAL which stipulates that the Supply Chain department comprises of 155 employees working in the various sections in the organization. The population sample was 5 l respondents and stratified sampling technique was used since the population from which the sample is drawn 'does not constitute a homogenous group. Structured questionnaires containing both open ended and closed ended questions were used to collect primary data. 48 questionnaires were filled and returned for analysis. Data collected was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative data analysis approaches with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation and regression analysis were also used while analyzing data. Descriptive analyses such as frequencies and percentages were .rsed to present quantitative data in form of frequency distribution tables and graphs such as bar charts and pie charts on major research questions while open-ended questions were analyzed qualitatively, arranged thematically and presented on form narrative to draw conclusions and recommendations.Item Effect of Inventory Management on performance of tea processing firms in Kenya(University of Embu, 2019) Kithinji, KiogoraItem Public Debt and Sustainable Development in Kenya(University of Embu, 2019) Kimathi, Eva MwendwaThe main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of debt on sustainable development in Kenya. The aim of the study was trying to establish the negative and positive effects of I FRS on organizational performance.Item Effects of Mobile Money Services on SME Performance: A Case of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES) in Embu County(University of Embu, 2019) Muema, FestusThe study sought to investigate the effect of mobile phone-based money transfer services on Small and Medium Enterprises' financial performance in Kenya. The objectives of this study were; to determine if mobile money services uptake has any effect on SMEs growth through increased sales or savings and loan accessibility, to establish whether Mobile Money Services has led to efficiency in service delivery in the SMEs sector, to find out the contribution of Mobile Money Services to better access to financial information in the SMEs sector in Kenya, convenience and accessibility result in increased SMEs performance and establish if mobile money services are considered reliable by SMEs in Embu county. The study adopted descriptive survey method. A target population of registered SMEs was used and total sample size of23 respondents was picked as representative giving a provision of 15% over and above the desired sample size in the event of non-response on some of the respondents in the sample size. The desired sample size was derived using Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) recommendation. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and interview guide. The collected data was analyzed using Statistical package for Social Scientist software. The results of the study were analyzed using descriptive and the results were presented using figures and tables. The findings of the study revealed that there is a positive correlation between SM Es financial performance and business growth, efficiency in service delivery, access to information and convenience and reliability. Development of mobile money transfer services influences the development of market; mobile money transfer services enhance efficiency in service delivery in business; access to information in mobile money transfer services depend on the environment and mobile money transfer services are convenient and reliable. The study highly recommends that SME's should have more user-friendly support services that help SM Goals be compatible with such services.Item Challenges of E-Procurement Adoptions in Kenyan Public Sector (A case study of parastatal in ministry of Finance).(University of Embu, 2019) Mumo, FelixThis study aimed to research e-procurement in the Public Sector with a view to investigate the challenges in adoption of e-procurement. Current literature on Public Procurement indicates a shift towards adoption of new technologies in Supply Chain processes that include e procurement. These technological changes in the external business environment are eliciting various responses from Supply Chain actors in the public sector. The level of public sector response is influenced by various factors posing as challenges to adoption of e-procurement. The existing literature indicates some of the challenges arising while responding to these technological changes include lack of employee competence, lack of management support, inadequate technological infrastructure for integrating e-procurement with other systems and concerns about security of e-procuremenl business transaction data and information. These perceived challenges are informed the purpose for this study. The study population included stale corporations under the Ministry of Finance. Due to time and financial constraints, the researcher carried out a simple random selection of three respondents from the procurement departments of all the 16 corporations giving a sample size of 48. Both primary and secondary data was used for the study. The research study used a questionnaire as a key instrument for primary data collection. Qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis. Quantitative data was analyzed through the use of frequency distribution, mean scores and standard deviations. In addition, one-way analysis of variance {ANOV A) tests was carried out. From the study, it was revealed that employee competency, lack of management Support, inadequate technological infrastructure and security of procurement transaction data was a challenge to e-procurement adoption in the organizations under review. The study recommended that among others, due to continuous turnover of the employees', continuous training for the incoming staff is required on e-procurement. In addition, formal recognition backed by management support of the electronic procurement transactions should be encouraged. The main problem will be that there has been increased level of fraud and misappropriation of funds in Kenyan commercial banks caused by poor internal control measures. The fact that Kenya has the highest incidences of fraud in the world, based on a global ranking of78 Countries surveyed andalso the findings that commercial banks in Kenya are more susceptible to fraud than commercial banks in her neighbouring countries in Eastern Africa formulated the basis of the research problem. The study adopted an explanatory research design. The population of the study was all the commercial banks operating in Embu county in the study period. The regressions will be conducted using statistical package for socialsciences (SPSS).Item The Impact of Liquidity on the Profitability of Small and Medium Enterprises in Embu County(University of Embu, 2019) Katwa, Meshack PeterSmall and medium enterprises operate in all segments or sectors of the economy in Kenya. They are in a high risk since they face challenges of liquidity management which in turn might have great impact on profitability. In another point of view small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya commonly have distinctive features: they are small in scope, have great probability of insolvency, great aptitude to alter the nature of their resources or assets and less transparency in the information provided to creditors. Due to this, in case of inadequate finances SMEs may have complications in accessing external funding, therefore edging their investment alternatives and probably leading IO severe falls in performance in wide-range and profitability in particular. Therefor this study aimed to establish whether there is statistically a substantial relationship between liquidity and profitability on SMEs in Embu County. It reviewed theories of working capital management developed by various scholars as well as researches which have been carried out on liquidity and working capital in the ancient days. These philosophies include; cash conversion cycle, simulation models, Baumol model and Keynesian theory of money. This research applied a descriptive research design. This design chiefly emphasized on determining the magnitude to which two variables relate and frequency of occurrence. Furthermore it was ordinarily concerned with delineating a population in accord to crucial variables, explaining relationships, and fact finding of various kinds. The population of consideration in this research composed of registered small and medium size firms and establishments operating in Embu County Kenya. The population encompassed SMEs from different sectors such as catering, banking, retail and wholesale and others. The study used secondary data which was collected from the financial reports of the enterprises selected. Two types of data analysis were applied i.e. quantitative and descriptive analysis. The research findings concluded that liquidity, leverage, and size have a positive but insignificant effect on profitability of SM Es in Embu County. Furthermore the results found that growth of the firms has a positive and significant effect on the profitability of SM Es in Embu County.Item Effects of Capital Structure on Financial Performance of Deposit-Taking Saccos in Embu County(University of Embu, 2019) Alulu, WalterThis research sought to determine the effects of capital structure on financial performance of deposit taking SACCOS in Embu County. Capital structure refers· to how firms fund their operations to enable them continue existing and grow. Many researchers have conducted research on capital structure but have left many gaps that thi� research sought to close them. The main objective of the research was the effects of debt, equity and retained earnings on financial performance of SACCOS. Causal research design was used to conduct the research. All the 6 deposit taking SACCOS in Embu County were selected for study hence no sampling was done. 46 questionnaires were administered for data collection. SPSS' software was used to analyze data. Debt had a significant effect on financial performance with a p-value of 0.020, equity had a significant effect on the financial performance with a p-value of 0.021 while retained earnings had no significant effect on financial performance with p-value of 0.73. In addition, the study showed that equity is the cheapest source of capital followed by debt. The research concluded and recommended that firms should strive to maintain an optimal capital structure.Item Funding System and Their Effects in Higher Education Systems(University of Embu, 2019) Wamaitha, Grace WatiriIn the recent years the demand for university education in' Kenya has changed positively and increases annually according to the recent research. Graduates frorp secondary school and working classes personnel are enrolling to pursue higher educatication in the universities and colleges. Universities are accountable to the society to ensure that they offer their students quality teaching, research and community service. As more and more students are looking for vacancies in public universities, while the quality of education requires urgent scrutiny. This article gives the reports on data from a series of study to examine the perception of the quality of service provision at public an private universities and opportunities for high-quality higher education in Kenya. it has been found that public universities do not have the physical facilities to effectively serve the body of current students. The study recommends the need to enroll many students in double income and provide a good education and offer quality education require heavy investment in physical facilities, teaching and research resources, innovative information, communication technology and collaborations with the private sectors.Item Corporate Governance and the Financial Performance of State Corporations: The Case of New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC)(University of Embu, 2019) Maina, Martha WanjiruCorporations performance by the performance contracting department at Corporate governance is a concept that involves practices that entail the organization of management and control of companies. It reflects the interaction among those persons and groups. which provide resources to the company and contribute to its performance such as shareholders, employees, creditors. long -terrn suppliers and subcontractors. It has been generally agreeable from many studies in the recent past that companies that have corporate governance systems in place also exhibit good performance. Thus corporate governance is increasingly being recognized as an important aspect of an efficient ,:111d effective board of directors, enhancing investment performance. This study sought to examine how Corporate Governance affects performance of state Corporations in Kenya. Well-governed firms have higher firm performance. Mismanagement, bureaucracy, wastage. incompetence and irresponsibility by directors and employees arc the main problems that have made State corporations (SCs) fail to achieve their performance. The poor performance of SCs in Kenya by 1990 led to outflow from central government to parastaials equivalent to 1 percent of the GDP in 1991. The objective of the study was to identify the relationship between performance, corporate governance and size of state corporations. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population for this study was 178 SCs in Kenya as presented by the report on Evaluation of the Performance of Public Agencies for the financial year 2010/2011 published in March, 2012 by Performance Contracting Department - Office of the former Prime Minister. Sample of 60 state corporations out of 178 was found ideal. Respondents were senior managers at these state corporations. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and multilinear regression technique. The findings were that the organizations that scored highly in corporate governance were also ranked highly in yearly ranking of state the current ministry of devolution. The empirical findings of this study are consistent with the guidance developed by capital Market Authority that companies should endeavor to attain the highest possible level of corporate governance. The study therefore recommends that financial monitoring should be clone thoroughly by the board and that State corporations should consider adopting conduct of regular Corporate Governance Audits and Evaluations.Item Factor Affecting Dividend Payout Ratio among Kenya Commercial Banks: Case of Banks in Embu County.(University of Embu, 2019) Kahoro, Lucy Wambui
